Havanese Health Issues

The most common health issues for the Havanese include cataracts, unilateral hearing loss, luxating patella, occasional heart murmurs, liver problems, hip dysplasia, LCP and sebaceous adenitis (SA).

I believe that thorough health testing of all breeding stock is esential and that all health testing should be made public for the benefit of the breed. It is always best to find any health issue before a dog is bred, not after the puppy develops the problem. For this reason all our breeding dogs are tested for, and certified clear of, any health issues including, but not limited to, hearing, patella, hips, elbows, liver function, heart, and thyroid. At the present time there is no test for SA except for dogs that have active cases. The girls are given a Wellness Two blood test before breeding to ensure that they are healthy enough to carry a litter.

Our puppies are taken to the University of Guelph for both BAER (hearing) tests and BACII (ammonia) testing for liver shunts. They also receive eye exams from a canine Opthamologist prior to leaving for thier new homes.

They will receive a thorough exam at the Northumberland Vet Clinic in Colborne which includes testing for patella strength and heart function. They will also receive their first set of shots as well as their microchip and then be registered with the Canadian Kennel Club. Most of our breeding dogs are registered with the American Kennel Club as well.
